The Age Old Debate: "Chili" or "Sauce"

After some considerable research, here is a graphic that visually illustrates where in West Virginia you order "chili" and where it's called "sauce." (For those new around here, there isn't a dime's difference between the two apart from the name.)

I grew up in Preston County calling it chili sauce...I guess that means I can't commit. As for my friends and neighbors in the P.Co., I mostly remember them referring to it as chili.

Actually, "chili sauce" is a nice compromise. I might ask a legislator to sponsor a bill next session to make it a state law to require HDJs to always use this inclusive term.

Born and raised in Harrison county...left 20 years ago. Everyone I know there still calls it "sauce".

In my region of the state, I've found that the older the one eating the hot dog is, the more likely they are to call it "sauce". To me, it all depends on the consistency itself: if the concoction has more liquid than meat, it's okay to refer to it as sauce. If it has more meat, then calling it "chili" is essential.

Just my two cents.

Roane Co=Chili. Not that I endorse the canned variety, but I have yet to see canned "Hot Dog Sauce"...it is Hot Dog Chilli even at Food Lion or Kroger. Of course they should prepackage it with slaw since the two are inseperable ;)
